The other day I overheard someone talking, 'Social determinants of health is boring.'
Sorry to hear that.
The subject never bores me because there are so many aspects to discover through research.
With every disease and well-being, there are so many contextual factors to think about other than the usual socioeconomic position.
Why people with a socially disadvantaged background end up in poor health or outcomes?
Is this because of poor academic achievement?
On the other hand, people with a socially advantaged background may not have the same outcome as people with a socially background and similar academic background. Why?
Mel Bartley's book, Health Inequality tells you possible pathways.
But, I would like to ask whether we think we do not have to look over other people's lives and health outcomes. Are they not our problems because they brought onto themselves? Can everybody's life be sorted via this individual behavioural approach? Think again, social gradients increases when this approach is taken. The problem what we think would work will not work for everyone; empirical evidence is based on majority around an average. It means only work for those are fairly educated with resources.
So, the subject of social determinants of health offers us so many aspects to consider.
Never be boring, my dear.
